An open-source project, LibreCAD is 100 free to all and can be tweaked, hacked, and modified with no restrictions. LibreCAD is a CAD software for 2D design. As Blender and Inkscape, FreeCAD is open source software so a true free CAD solution (free as in freedom not as in free beer). The program falls under the Lesser General Public License, and a stable version of SALOME was released on December 21, 2018. Fusion 360 is a professional CAD program developed by Autodesk that combines CAD, CAM, CAE, and PCB design into one unified suite. Also, it comprises industrial meshing algorithms, and its highlighted geometry editor can import XAO, STL, IGES, BREP, and STEP files. It gives you complete access to the code base, negating any unnecessary time spent outdated APIs. It’s also supported on multiple platforms such as Windows, macOS, Linux, and Unix-like operating systems. SALOME has built-in support for Python, but itself is written in C++. SALOME utilizes various CAD and CAE modeling tools with over-the-top visualizations techniques. It’s a subsidiary project of OpenCascade, and, as mentioned before, has accumulated a significant userbase. Salome excels in the post-processing of numerical simulations and works great for industrial designs. FreeCAD runs exactly the same way on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux platforms. The reason we picked SALOME as the third mention on the list is because of its unmatched capabilities and portability as an open-source, free CAD software with a widely increasing community. FreeCAD is based on OpenCasCade, a powerful geometry kernel, features an Open Inventor-compliant 3D scene representation model provided by the Coin 3D library, and a broad Python API.
